Claire Freeze (age 91) Of Rosalia, Washington, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2017 in Fairfield, Washington. She was born May 13, 1926 in Moscow, Idaho to Alfred and Verla (Draper) Hengen. Claire was a graduate of Spangle High School where she was a Majorette. While working at Geiger Field, she met Joe Freeze who was in the Army Air Corp. They married and started their life together in Spangle. Joe, a carpenter, built their home in Rosalia where they raised their family. She enjoyed decorating her home, sewing clothes for her girls, and collecting antiques. She was a busy mom, serving as Cub Scout Den Mother, and was active in her Alpha Club and Bridge Club. The Freeze’s enjoyed taking trips back to Joe’s family in Indiana, be it by train, station-wagon pulling a tear-drop trailor, truck with a camper, or motorhome. Those cozy trips gave them all plenty of time for bonding. For numerous years Joe served as Mayor of Rosalia, and during Battle Days, Claire was known for throwing great parties back at the house. When Tami, her youngest, was in high school, Claire went to work at the Whitman County Treasurer’s Office, and then the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in Colfax. Christmas at the Freeze’s was a big event. The family would sing Christmas songs, play cards, and the grandkids performed magic tricks, creating lasting memories loved by everyone. Santa and Mrs. Clause consistently made an appearance to hand out special gifts to all of the grandkids, and there was always a steady supply of popcorn, soda, and donuts for them. And despite the frowns from the parents, she would willingly serve ice cream for breakfast. Grandma Ci, as she was affectionately known, loved to attend and encourage the grandkids in all of their sports competitions and other activities. She could always be heard yelling “Do it!” from the stands. Her positive outlook, love of singing, and two-handed waves will be missed, but the treasured memories she created for others will always remain. She is survived by her four children, Frosty (Jill) Freeze, Dixie (Mike) Burnham, Debbie (Mike) Birdsell, and Tami (Don) Meserve, ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, mother Verla, father Alfred, and sister Helen. The family also wishes to thank Thies Adult Family Home in Fairfield for their loving and special care of Claire. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, at the IOOF Evergreen Cemetery in Rosalia. Schanzenbach Funeral Home, Rosalia, Washington.
